The Region - Cassowary Coast and Wet Tropics (World Heritage Listed)
The region around Etty Bay has real character and provides an array of things to see or do. The natural wonders of this region were recognized by Sir David Attenborough (see clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EdXkEImSps)
Nearby Innisfail is a prosperous, colourful town, situated on the North and South Johnstone Rivers, and is surrounded by rich green landscape. Lush sugar plantations flow from the dense rainforest coastline to the thick jungles of the Palmerston National Park to the west.
Sugar has been grown in the region since the early 1880's. More recently, tea, bananas, pawpaws and other exotic tropical fruits have been grown. Aquaculture also plays an important part in the area's economy ranging from prawn, barramundi, and fresh crayfish, to crocodile farming. A variety of local cultural festivals are held annually. Etty Bay is situated near the centre of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
There are plenty of day-trip destinations available. To the north, Cairns is little over one hour away and going south, Mission Beach is a 40 minute drive.
